The defeat of Desuetude in the Group Three The Run To The Rose at Rosehill by international jockey Kerrin McEvoy was received with mixed emotions. This was because it was first predicted that it would be difficult to beat the Peter Snowden trained gelding during the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) on August 30, while it was guaranteed that McEvoy would not be in the saddle for the race.

I learnt that this was because McEvoy had been ruled out of the Golden Rose, on being handed a five meeting suspension for his careless riding at Canterbury on Wednesday. This is why McEvoy finds it disappointing that he won’t be riding Desuetude during the Golden Rose as he was hard to beat if he ran really hard for the race.

McEvoy is Darley Australia’s number one rider, and though he is really disappointed for not being able to ride Desuetude next start, he was really excited with the effort displayed in the 1300 meter feature. It was during this race that Desuetude had lead the straight, before Maybe I, the Gai Waterhouse trained horse went past him to look like the winner of the race.

However 100 m from home, Desuetude had dug deep and fended off Maybe I by a short head while David Payne’s Emperor Bonaparte ended up third at three-quarters of a length away.
