The History of Horse Racing
Posted by Cliff at Jun 4th, 2008 in Horse Racing Basics
Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has been around for centuries. I know many of you are thinking; we know…we know, however bare with me. For those of you who are not so familiar with where this fascinating sport came from…sit back and listen up.
Horse Racing Started in Greek times in early 12th century. Great races were started almost six centuries later like: The Oaks in 1778, The Derby in 1780, and the 1,000 Guineas in 1814.
The Oaks- The Epsom Oaks Race is an annual race going as far back as 1778. In 1779 the Earl himself competed and won with his horse “Bridget”. The race course is just over 12 Furlongs, having been extended from the original length of just under 12 Furlongs.
The 1,000 Guineas- This race is run in late April and sometimes in early May. It was first run in 1814 when then it was the equivalent of the 2,000 guineas. This is run over roughly one mile.
So you see these races are go further back than we do. And will be raced for centuries to come!
Until next time,
Happy Racing….
