Solwhit overcomes Hurricane

Solwhit put up a great performance in winning the Dobbins & Madigans at Punchestown Hurdle. Under the capable hands of Davy Russell, the five year old managed to beat Muirhead by two and a half lengths. Even Hurricane Fly, who ended up third, didn’t have the power or speed to beat him.

Trainer Charles Brynes was delighted with his performance and was on record as saying that if they hadn’t beaten Hurricane Fly today, they never would beat him. Next, Solwhit is slotted to race at the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle in two weeks’ time. However if he doesn’t make it there, mainly due to doubts in the going with all the rain we’ve been having, they plan to run him next after Christmas.

In the meantime, you may have seen in the news that Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Khyber Kim managed to secure his first win after two years at the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham. From sitting in fourth position and looking nicely placed to mount a challenge, the seven year old was coaxed home impressively by Brennan to take the lead over the final flight to finally beat the much fancied Harry Tricker by two lengths.

Brennan too plans to next race Khyber Kim at the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle. However if things don’t work out as planned, they intend to save him for the festival.
