Racing Today Suffers From Domination

With the news this week that predictably, Paul Nicholls, AP McCoy and JP Mcmanus all picked up awards in their respective categories, does this beg the question of racing today, well certainly National Hunt racing, being dominated by one ’super power’.

And is it right, and indeed healthy for the sport?

In Nicholls’ case, he amassed a massive 155 winners during the season, beating his previous best. He also amassed more than 3.5 Million pounds in prize money which in this sport is a huge amount of cash.

And of course not resting on his laurels, Nicholls’ is already scheming in readiness for next season, by announcing that he plans for Kauto Star to win a fourth King George’s title, amongst others.

Tony McCoy was aldo in the record books of course, finally after many days of leaving us all on tenterhooks, surpassing the 3,000 career winners mark. An quite unbelievable achievement and one that I do think will ever be replicated, nor beaten.

He won the Champion Jockey award for an astounding 14th consecutive season! So once again, I refer you to my previous question… is this all getting a bit boring??

And on to our friend Mr. JP McManus. We all wish him well in his recovery after an operation for prostate cancer. He is no doubt, still the dominant force amongst National Hunt racehorse owners, but is racing going the same way that football is, with the money men dominating and potentially devaluing the sport?

I’ll leave that open to discussion again, as I feel this is a subject that could rear its ugly head on more than one occasion in the future.

I must convey my congratulations to all three individuals, but am keen to know your views on whether this is indeed a good thing or a bad thing?
