Berlais to head to Cheltenham

Trainer David Pipe had first decided to run his Hennessy winner Madison Du Berlais in the Racing Post Chase that is scheduled to be held at Kempton this weekend. However with Berlais giving Denman his first defeat over fences, Pipe has decided to send him straight to the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
This is because Pipe has decided that Berlais should run at the Cheltenham Gold Cup as a fresh horse, as this could give him a better chance of winning the Gold Cup. Although he had surprised many with the victory, he has kept on improving and Pipe feels that he deserves his chance.
Pipe feels that he is really lucky to get to run a horse that has a great chance of winning the Gold Cup, so early in his career. He also says that he wouldn’t have received this chance if it wasn’t for the support of a few good owners.
Though Pipe has so much of confidence with Madison Du Berlais, I am quite surprised to find out that Berlais is as low as 6-1 with the sponsors of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Another interesting addition to the Cheltenham Gold Cup is Psychomodo, under the reins of Brendan Powell.
In fact, Psychomodo had given him his first win as a trainer by winning at the Cumbria course. And though the ground was not favorable, Wilson Renvick’s mount ended up in the lead at the first Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide 2009 Novices’ Chase.

I’m not sure that I have the same optimism that David Pipe does. Madison Du Berlais is a great horse but the Cheltenham Gold Cup is a wide open race. Denman is going to be right up ther again as will be Kauto Star.
Hi Jeremy,
I have to say that I agree with you. Kauto Star is undoubtedly the one to beat and it would be a real shame if Denman’s health means that he can’t run at his best.
The going is gonna be absolutely key though, lets pray for some dry weather between now and then.
Thanks
Cliff
